LET’S PLANT LOTS OF GOOD SEED

“Remember this—

a farmer who plants only a few seeds

will get a small crop.

But the one who plants generously

will get a generous crop.”

The average last frost in the St. Louis area is April 15th, so I usually have my garden planted by now. According to those who seem to know, it takes two weeks of 50 degree nights for the ground to be ready. Those of you who live in St. Louis know our spring this year, for the most part, has been cold and wet. So my garden is late.

I see gardening as working together with God. I plow the ground when He has it ready - plant the seed that He has produced – help with the watering if it doesn’t rain enough – pull weeds and do some mulching, but it’s God who makes His seed to grow – producing vegetables for us and our neighbors to enjoy.

God has set laws in motion that never change. A seed will always reproduce itself – what we sow is what we get. If we are skimpy with the seeds we put in the ground, our crop will also be skimpy. The same principles operate in our lives.

Our life in this world is a time of planting, and also the beginning of reaping what we plant. But the full harvest will be realized in the world to come. If we live life to satisfy our sinful human nature, we will start to reap the consequences – emptiness, lack of peace, no true hope, --- . However, in the world to come, we will fully reap what a sinful human nature will ultimately yield – eternal death - separated from God. On the other hand, as we put our trust in Christ we are born again with a spiritual nature which has the capacity to please God. And as we obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we begin to enjoy the first fruits of the harvest – real love, joy, peace ---. And in the world to come - we will reap the full harvest – eternal life in all it’s fullness in the presence of our Savior - forever and ever!!

Paul says, “Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” Galatians 6:7 First off, obviously the smartest thing for us to do is to plant good seed which will produce the best harvest in this world and the world to come. And secondly, let’s plant lots of it!! It’s not that hard to figure out.

Let’s Pray-
Father, even as believers, we catch ourselves planting bad seed and taste the bitter results. That’s so stupid. Please forgive us. Help us to plant your good seed and not be skimpy about it.
