SOME DAY- SICKNESS & DEATH - GONE FOREVER

Physical health is a blessing that is easily taken for granted. Those of us who have had good health most of our life haven’t given it much thought, just assumed it would always be that way. But we all know people who haven’t been that fortunate. Some of you reading these words today have struggled with poor health in the past, or maybe that is your experience right now.

James, the half brother of our Lord says, “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.”(a) All of us know people who have been healed through prayer. And most likely, we ourselves have been healed that way. Without question, prayer needs to be our first course of action when illness strikes. However, we must admit it hasn’t always brought the results we were hoping for.

Why aren’t we healed every time we, or the elders, pray for our healing? We may have all sorts of questions about that. Whatever your thoughts, don’t let some “super spiritual” people put a guilt trip on you by insinuating that you are not healed because you don’t have enough faith or there is some secret sin in your life. Now that possibly could be true in some situations, but that certainly is not the case every time. Even when every known sin is forgiven and prayers of faith are offered, we are not always healed.

When a loving Heavenly Father doesn’t heal us, He has a good reason. Sickness causes us to realize our frailty and makes us think more seriously about eternity. It has a way of drawing us closer to God. He may allow us to go through illness so we can be a help to others going through similar situations.(b) It has a way of uniting us with other believers as they pray for us – send us cards – call us on the phone - stop by for a visit. God brings good, even out of sickness.

If we were healed every time we prayed for healing, we would never die. But we know death will eventually come, and the process can be a most painful one. But the day is coming when “God will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”(c) The prophet Malachi predicts: “the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.”(d) What a glorious prospect is ours when we will forever be with our Lord!

Lets Pray-
Father, thank you for the times you have graciously healed us, and thank you also for the good you brought about in our lives when you in your wisdom withheld healing.
Help us to walk close to you in health and in sickness. Thank you for the blessed hope of being free of sickness FOREVER!
Amen
